I have thumbnails in Windows explorer. Some day I opened memory card using "import photos using Windows Gallery" (or Windows Live Gallery), and Windows Gallery downloaded and installed Nikon codecs to open RAW files (restart system required).

You are probably running Windows Vista and not Windows XP which does not have the Windows Live Gallery. I do not run Vista as it uses too many system resources.
